Vinalhaven Public Library

After more than three years of dedicated volunteer effort, more than 200 islanders and guests attended the over a million dollar expansion of our Vinalhaven Library on August 15, 2007 - exactly 100 years and 90 minutes to the moment that the original building was dedicated in 1907.

The ceremony was moderated by Friends of the Library Co-chairs, Helen and Philip Greven, Maine's First Lady, Karen W. Baldacci was the principle program speaker, following the presentation of a symbolic facility key by June MacDonald, Co-chair of the Centennial Committe, to Leonard "Buddy" Skoog, Chair of the Library Trustees. Other guests included State Librarian Linda H. Lord, Representative Hannah Pingree, and Earl Shettleworth, Director of Maine Historic Preservation. Musical selections were presented by the Granite Chicks, an island acappella group.

In her remarks, Karen Baldacci noted that "Island libraries are essential life changing institutions, and the Vinalhaven library renovatin and addition sends a powerful message that reading and learning are important and valued."

The new addition was designed by architect Martin Stein, a long-time seasoanl resident. It provides space for a new Children's Room, a Teen Center, and reading, meeting and exhibition areas with space for volunteers and staff. The Children's Room is named in memory of the architect's wife, noted children's author, Sara Bonnett Stein. In addition, areas of the original building underwent renovation. Andrew B. Creelman of Vinalhaven was the project"s general contractor.

The completed project is a result of an intensive fund raising campaign by the Friends of the Library.
