Some research says readers begin in the womb. In the womb, as a newborn, as a toddler or as a young adult we are absolutely dedicated to encouraging children to read.
We are always adding to our collection-often with books and videos suggested by parents.
We offer:
-
One Story Time each week on Saturday at 10 a.m.
-
We are partnering with the Island Community Medical Center to support The Raising Readers Program. Babies to five years old and their parents receive age-appropriate books at well child visits.
-
Summer Reading Program: Studies have shown that children who continue to read during the summer when school is not in session perform better in the fall when school resumes. Summer reading programs make educational reading activities fun and appealing to young people. To this end the Friends of Library sponser the Summer Reading Program.
Children log in their summer reading minutes or pages and at the end of the summer, before school starts, they submit their log sheets and receive a penny/minute or page. The accumulated pennies are used to buy books at our discounted Library rate. Some children select close to $100 in books! The program is open to all young readers! Ask the staff about the program!
-
Saturday Summer Children's Program: Also sponsored by the Friends of the Library. The program is themeĀ based, often on the State Summer Reading Program.Join us this summer each Saturday at 10 a.m
-
Partnering with the School: The Vinalhaven Public Library and the SAD#8 Library act in concert on various programs and the purchase of books and costly collections. We try to supplement each other's collections so students have access to a wide-ranging selection of fiction and nonĀ-fiction sources.
-
Maine Student Book Award - The Friends of the Library purchased a collection of the Maine Student Book Awards (MSBA) books for the SAD #8 libraries. Students then vote at the school for their favorites. The tally feeds into the State totals and the most favorite is selected! We are pleased that the MBNA Library Grant Program purchased the MSBA books for the Public Library for many years. Now the MSBA Books will be purchased from the Friends of the Library Librarian's Choice Fund.
-
Golden Trap Award - - Designed by our own SAD#8 Librarian, Susan Dempster, one K-4th grade book is selected for the Golden Trap Award from a selection suggested by Island Librarians. The Award's logo was designed by Vinalhaven's own Oakley Jackson. Children vote at the school and have access to the selections at both libraries.
