The purpose of the Friends Group is to:

• Focus public attention on the library
• Stimulate the use of the libraries resources and services
• Receive and encourage gifts, endowments and bequests to the library
• Support and cooperate with the library to develope library service and facilities for the community
• Support the freedom to read as expressed in the American Library Association Bill of Rights

Second Hand Prose

The Friends also produce a newsletter and manages and staffs with volunteers Second-Hand Prose, a bookstore that produces the funds for the above programs.

In January, 2001 the Friends of the Vinalhaven Public Library undertook a new fundraising venture by opening a second-hand bookshop called Second-Hand Prose. We sell donated books and those culled from the Library. It is staffed completely by volunteers who give more than 2000 hours each year. The sales have been phenomenal, exceeding our wildest dreams. But our sales are only as good as your donations. Bring your donations to either the Library or Second-Hand Prose. Donated books, videos and audio books are reviewed for possible inclusion in the Library collection before being offered for sale. The money raised at the bookstore goes to buy books for the library, especially children's and large print. It also supports the many programs listed above.

Store hours are Monday - Saturday 9:30 to 3:30
