Description: Anne Morrow Lindbergh summered on North Haven for a quarter century. She discovered nature, wrote poetry, and found refuge from the numbing celebrity she and her husband, aviator Charles Lindbergh, faced as the world's best-known couple in the 1930s and 1940s. Here she developed as a pilot, conservationist, writer, and feminist.
A presentation by Andrew Cohen, journalist, author and historian.

Aquaculture and Scallops Talk
"Scallops scallops everywhere and all the meats to eat!"This talk will highlight the uniqueness of scallops as a species and delve into the industries working to bring it to our tables. We'll also learn about how these industries are managed and the research being conducted around the state to understand the ecology, biology, and economics of scallops and the industries they support.

Kate Hotchkiss will visit he library to talk about her new book “On Harbor’s Edge Book 2: 1914-1930’s”.
On Harbor’s Edge Book Two: 1914 – 1930s is a gripping standalone tale transporting readers into one of history’s most turbulent times. With World War I and social upheavals impacting the beloved and contentious figures of Hale Harbor, this captivating Maine island drama builds on the popular, also standalone story, On Harbor’s Edge Book One: 1912 – 1913.

Lindsey Taylor will visit he library to talk about her book “Art in Flower: Finding Inspiration an art and Nature”.
Lindsey Taylor is a garden designer and floral stylist based in upstate New York. Prior to founding her design studio, Taylor was for over a decade a floral expert, writer, and editor for several publications, including the Wall Street Journal, Martha Stewart Living, Domino, Garden Design, T Magazine, and Architectural Digest.

Author Karen Richards Toothaker will share her book Say Cheese! A to Z in a fun,
interactive storytime drawing on the spunky personality of the main character.
Children will be invited to join in playing interactive games, movement, and singing;
with plenty of photo ops - Say Cheese!

“The American Revolution Comes to Maine”, a presentation by Harry Gratwick
Harry Gratwick will visit the library to talk about the “American Revolution Comes to Maine”. He has researched and prepared a presentation that will surely be interesting as well as informative. Harry is an engaging speaker and his program last summer was well attended.

Author Visit with Kate Woodworth
Kate Woodworth will visit he library to talk about her new book “Little Great Island”.
On Little Great Island, climate change is disrupting both life and love.
After offending the powerful pastor of a cult, Mari McGavin has to flee with her six-year-old son. With no money and no place else to go, she returns to the tiny Maine island where she grew up—a place she swore she’d never see again. There Mari runs into her lifelong friend Harry Richardson, one of the island’s summer residents, now back himself to sell his family’s summer home. Mari and Harry’s lives intertwine once again, setting off a chain of events as unexpected and life altering as the shifts in climate affecting the whole ecosystem of the island…from generations of fishing families to the lobsters and the butterflies.
Little Great Island illustrates in microcosm the greatest changes of our time and the unyielding power of love.

“Social Media Safety for Seniors” Workshop
Come to the library for a workshop where Maura Lunde and Emi Nagura, fellow Girl Scouts, teach senior citizens about social media safety and how to easily navigate both your devices and important apps, as well as navigate social media to easily stay in contact with loved ones. The workshops will be presented, and then there will be time after the presentations for hands-on help with devices, and any other questions that need to be answered.

“Color 101”: Everything you wanted to know about color but were afraid to ask. A presentation by Peter Bodnar III
Peter Bodnar III will visit the library to give a presentation about color. He is an artist-teacher and longtime Vinalhaven summer resident. He has taught color in all media for 50 years and exhibits at the New Era Gallery.
“Humans are gifted with color vision — but seldom use it to it’s full potential. A basic look at color theory, color vocabulary and visual perception makes like more enjoyable for everyone.”

Author Visit with Jason Ryan
Author Jason Ryan of Charleston, South Carolina, will speak about his nonfiction book Jackpot, which chronicles the rise and fall of the South’s “gentlemen smugglers," who sailed nearly a billion dollars worth of marijuana into East Coast marshes in the 1970s and ‘80s before falling victim to President Ronald Reagan’s War on Drugs.

“The Bugmobile”
The Bugmobile from Chewonki will visit the library!
Is a bug an insect? Is a spider a bug? Chewonki’s “Bugmobile” transports the world of arthropods—insects and their relatives—into the classroom.
Using models, costumes, and live specimens, we explain the unique characteristics of four major groups of arthropods. Our live “bug” species will introduce you to some of the fascinating adaptations essential for survival, such as mimicry, camouflage, armor, and the use of venom.

Come to Vinalhaven Public Library for an evening featuring readings from Annie Penfield and (hopefully) some local writers.
Annie Penfield is a memoirist, and essayist and had a reading at the library last year. She is currently attending a retreat on-island and has offered to visit us again.

“Otters, Owls, and Other Stuff” with Kirk Gentalen
Otters, Owls and Other Stuff
For this presentation Gentalen will be sharing his favorite stories, photos and chuckles from his times exploring the island, as well as dishing out much appreciation and gratitude for the opportunities he offered.
Kirk Gentalen is the mid-coast Maine Regional Stewardship Manager for the Maine Coast Heritage Trust (MCHT), with the Fox Islands and St. George peninsula being his ‘turf’. He writes a blog – Nature Bummin with Kirk Gentalen (mcht.org/story-tag/nature- bummin) and continues to steward MCHT’s Vinalhaven properties (as well as Lane’s Island). And he loves each and every ferry ride.
Poetry Reading with Paddy Noble and Patricia Sweeney
Join us at the library as we listen to two wonderful poets read from their work.
Paddy Noble is a year round resident of Vinalhaven. Published in numerous collections here and abroad she has won awards for her poetry over the last forty years. In the past she has done readings of her work on radio, local tv stations, at Universities and other venues. Her poetry can be found in our local paper, “The Wind”, and, when she can ‘sit still’, she is working on her third book of poetry.
Patricia Sweeney, a graduate of Rutgers University, has been friends with Paddy Noble for 40 years. In the past, in New York, they often read their poems together. Patricia grew up on a farm, which formed the basis of much of her poetry. She’s the author of “A Thousand Times & Other Poems”, by Canios Editions in NY. More recently, she is published in “Sufi Magazine”.

Carl and David Little will visit the library to talk about their book, “Art of Penobscot Bay”. Art from local artist, Elaine Crossman, is included in the book.

Fairy House Workshop CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER REPORT!!!!
Join Liza Gardner Walsh at the Vinalhaven Public Library on Saturday, August 10 at 10:30am for a Fairy House Workshop! Reading excerpts from the Fairy House Handbook, Liza will share what exactly is a fairy house, the rules of the forest, and tips on attracting fairies. This interactive program builds on children’s innate knowledge of fairies, nature and the fairy house world. Kids will create a collaborative fairy house.

Oh, the Places You’ll Go…When Exploring Family Secrets
When shocking DNA test results upended Vinalhaven resident Michelle Tullier’s sense of self, family, and home, she embarked on a journey to uncover the truth and reclaim her identity. Join us as Michelle recounts tales of her travels from the Louisiana bayous and Bible Belt to the South Carolina Low Country, tracing family footsteps against a backdrop of the Great Depression, WWII, racial segregation, and homophobia. Learn from her virtual travels back to the tragic 18th-century expulsion of Acadians from the Bay of Fundy, and hear about the surprising way her quest concluded at a revered Vinalhaven institution. With humor, poignant candor, photographs, and readings from her literary memoir No Finer Place, this promises to be an engaging and informative evening.
